SEM (Search Engine Marketing) is the process of paying for advertising on search engines to gain traffic to your website. You only pay for Google’s adwords search advertising by the click on your ad so it’s also referred to as PPC (Pay Per Click) or CPC (Cost Per Click). Some people also call it Paid Search Advertising because you’re paying to be listed on Google’s first page search results in the designated ad spaces (see image below). Where as organic search listings are free to be listed on and you can’t pay for a high ranking. If you want to rank high on the organic search listings, that’s where organic SEO comes in to play.
